Good morning, Court Theorists! ☕️🌱
Today’s tennis mood: Deeply contemplative on tennis rules while trying to enjoy the short grass season.
Let’s tennis!

🎾 On tap: Today isn’t quite as chock-full of top players on the court compared to yesterday, but there are some fun match-ups across Spain, England, and Germany. More on that below. And don’t forget you can watch Wimbledon qualifying for free on the tournament’s website — the women’s qualies draw kicks off today.
🎾 THE Story: For the last 24 hours, the story that has dominated the tennis headlines is the four-year suspension of Marketa Vondrousova over her decision to refuse an anti-doping test last year. Perhaps a ban wasn’t a surprise, but the length of it is a bit of a stunner. Given the maximum suspension, it’s as if she had consumed all of the banned substances. Indeed, there are players who have tested positive for banned substances and received much less. And that raises questions about the equation the ITIA uses in sentencing, and even more questions about certain players receiving preferential treatment.
What she said: “I have never doped,” she wrote. “I have never had a positive test. Throughout my entire career, I have undergone countless anti-doping controls and have always stepped onto the court with a clear conscience,” Vondrousova posted on Instagram. “I cooperated. I answered every question. I provided everything that was asked of me. I testified before the tribunal and did my best to explain what happened. I gave it everything I had. Every bit of my energy, strength, and belief.”
Zoom in: Vondrousova said she refused the test because the 8:15 pm visit caused an “acute stress reaction.” However, as the ITIA senior director for anti-doping, Nicole Sapstead said in a briefing on Monday, “The player signed the refusal form outside. She left her apartment to walk her dog and made it clear to the doping control officer that she was refusing a test. The doping control officer asked her to sign the form to indicate as much.” She added: “So, yes, that was made very clear to the player. It was very clear that the player did not wish to engage with the process.”
🎾 One to watch: Naomi Osaka vs. Elise Mertens (2nd round - WTA 500 - Bad Homburg): Watch this one for two players who know each other well and have a compelling head-to-head record.
The record: Naomi Osaka leads the head-to-head record over Elise Mertens 4-3. Mertens won their most recent meeting on the hard courts of Toronto in 2024.
On the line: For Mertens, this is an opportunity to get a little more confidence on grass going into Wimbledon, where she had fourth-round points to defend. On Osaka’s side of the court, she’s living and dying by each match she plays. Which one will it be today?
