🎾 Day One: It’s opening day at the Madrid Open, and, like so many of the 1000-level events adding another day, this one is kicking off with a bit of a whisper. On tap today are just 10 main draw women’s matches as qualifying wraps up. Still, there are a few things worth noting:

  • Venus Williams is taking the court. She’ll face fellow wild card Kaitlin Quevedo of Spain, who is less than half the age of Queenus at 20.

  • American fan favorite Robin Montgomery is playing her first tour-level event since Wimbledon due to a knee injury and then right wrist surgery.

  • And the same goes for last year’s Roland-Garros Cinderella story, Lois Boisson.

  • Latest withdrawals: Jack Draper and Ekaterina Alexandrova.

🎾 In a splint: While the Madrid Open kicks off this week, Roland-Garros defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is waiting to see if his 2026 clay season is over. A right wrist and forearm injury sustained in Barcelona last week has sidelined the young Spaniard. At the Laureus Awards in Madrid, where he was named Sportsman of the Year, Alcaraz was seen wearing a splint on his wrist under his tuxedo.

  • What he said: “I have a very long career ahead of me, with many years still to come. Forcing things at this Roland Garros could really harm me for future tournaments,” Alcaraz said. “We’ll see how it goes. As I said, I’d rather come back a little later but in good shape than come back too soon, rushing things and not at my best.”

  • Next: Alcaraz said he’s awaiting more test results to determine when he may return to competition, noting, “For now, I’m just trying to stay positive and keep my spirits up, even though these days feel long.”

🎾 Piling on: After retiring during his first-round match in Barcelona, Jack Draper has withdrawn from the Madrid Open and the Italian Open due to a tendon injury in his knee. That’s a different ailment from the bone bruise that sidelined him for much of 2025.

  • What he said: “It’s frustrating for sure but I am thankful it isn’t anything more serious, recovery is going well and I feel good about my chances of being fit for Roland Garros. I am looking forward to building momentum from there!!”

  • The numbers: Because he had finalist points to defend in Madrid and quarterfinalist points in Rome, he is projected to drop outside of the top 70 within a few weeks.

🎾 One to watch: Peyton Stearns vs. Lois Boisson (1st round - WTA 1000 - Madrid): Watch this one for a temperature check on both players. For Stearns, this is the first match on red clay of the season. And, for Boisson, this is the first match in six months after a left adductor injury and a quadriceps tear sidelined her in October. Most importantly, these are two good dirtballers who should put on a good match, even if it’s their first of the red clay season.

  • The record: This is the first time Peyton Stearns and Lois Boisson will face each other.

  • On the line: With Roland-Garros semifinalist points to defend next month, Boisson needs matches, and a first-round exit in Madrid won’t help with that preparation. And Stearns has some significant points to defend in Madrid and Rome (4th round and semifinals, respectively).

And that’s game.
