Svitolina-Monfils Split, Tour Finals Race Continues, Musetti vs. Arnaldi & More

Good morning, Court Theorists! ☕️☀️

Today’s tennis mood: Shocked over Svitolina-Monfils, touched by the title journeys of Maja Chwalinska and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Let’s tennis!

Four Points

🎾 On tap: A new week, a new schedule. The women continue their Asian swing with tournaments in Ningbo and Osaka, while the men move westward to Astana, Brussels, and Lyon.

  • In action this week: Elena Rybakina, Iga Swiatek, Marta Kostyuk, Iva Jovic, Ann Li, Peyton Stearns, Arthur Fils, Jiri Lehecka, Alex Michelsen, Zizou Bergs, Flavio Cobolli, Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Brandon Nakashima, Lorenzo Musetti, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Bublik, and Andrey Rublev, among others. Check out today’s matches below.

  • Noteworthy: There’s just one spot left in the WTA Tour Finals, now that Elina Svitolina has made the cut. That leaves Karolina Muchova, Iga Swiatek, and Marta Kostyuk as the remaining eligible players to grab the last spot. Swiatek and Kostyuk are looking to surge ahead by winning 500 points in Ningbo this week.

🎾 ICYMI: From last week’s tournaments, a pair of surprising winners — and finalists! — emerged. Here’s how that shook out…

  • Wuhan: Maja Chwalinska won her first WTA Tour title by defeating a rebounding Sonay Kartal 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

  • Shanghai: Alejandro Davidovich Fokina overcame a first-set thumping by Rafael Jodar to win his first Masters 1000 title 1-6, 7-6, 6-4.

🎾 Complete shock: Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils are going their separate ways, according to an Instagram post from Svitolina.

  • What she said: “Everyone knows how much Ukraine means to me. What I have rarely spoken about is what the war has done to me inside. Last year, I told you I needed to step away from the court because I wasn’t in the right emotional space. Today, I want to open up a little more. What you didn’t see were the sleepless nights, the doubts, and the feeling of slowly losing myself,” she wrote. “Gaël saw all of it. He never let go of my hand. We fought through this together for a long time, with everything we had. But some battles happen deep inside you, and no amount of love from someone else can win them for you.” She added: “With time, I came to understand that I need to find my way back to myself and that I cannot do that within our marriage. It is the hardest truth I have ever had to face and the hardest thing I have ever had to tell the person I love. Gaël listened. He has respected what I need with a strength and grace I will never forget.”

  • Yes, and: This might explain Monfils’s mysterious appearance on the ITIA retirement list before what was expected to be his final showing at the Paris Masters 1000.

🎾 One to watch: Matteo Arnaldi vs. Lorenzo Musetti (1st round - ATP 250 - Lyon): Watch this one for the unfortunate Italian vs. Italian first-round match-up, but also because it’s always a battle.

  • The record: The lopsided 4-0 head-to-head record in favor of Lorenzo Musetti does not do Matteo Arnaldi’s efforts justice.

  • On the line: Neither one of these players has much in the way of points to defend, but both of these players are on the mend and want to get more matches under their belts. Only one will this week.
