🎾 Today in Paris: First-round matches wrap up today, and there are some good ones. More on that below. Men’s and women’s doubles also get underway, with lots of favorites (and some surprising pairings) taking court. But everyone’s opponent, the heat, continues to be a formidable force as temperatures reach the 90s yet again with no foreseeable break until Sunday.

🎾 Two goodbyes: Monday was an emotional day in Paris, as Stan Wawrinka and Gael Monfils said their goodbyes to Roland-Garros. Both players put up a strong first-round fight, but neither advanced. Wawrinka lost to Jesper de Jong in four sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. And, in the prime time slot, Hugo Gaston defeated Monfils in five, 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 6-0. Wawrinka and Monfils each had their own tearful tribute ceremonies.
🎾 One to watch: Coco Gauff vs. Taylor Townsend (1st round - Roland-Garros): Watch this one to see where Gauff’s head is after a fairly mediocre clay season leading up to this major, as she takes on Townsend — a player who recognizes and often seizes opportunities. Beyond that, watch these two for what should be a fascinating match in terms of contrast of play. Gauff will forever be trying to make Townsend hit one more ball, while Townsend looks to mix things up and keep Gauff out of any rhythm until it’s time to go for a winner or come to the net.
The record: Taylor Townsend leads the head-to-head record over Coco Gauff 1-0. However, that one win was in 2019.
On the line: As the fourth seed and the defending champion, all the pressure is on Gauff. That allows Townsend to swing freely and play her game.
