Sinner Injury Update, Sabalenka’s Rough Weekend, Muchova vs. Osaka & More

Good morning, Court Theorists! ☕️☀️

Today’s tennis mood: Baffled by Alcaraz and tickled by Ostapenko’s stardom in China.

Let’s tennis!

Four Points

🎾 On tap: Alright, let’s kick off this week with…some unfinished business. 🫠 Here’s the state of things: The WTA 1000 in Beijing is in the fourth round. The ATP 500s in Beijing and Tokyo have finally reached the final round. In action: Mirra Andreeva, Karolina Muchova, Naomi Osaka, Carlos Alcaraz, and Alex de Minaur, among others. More on the rundown below.

🎾 Taking a knee: If you haven’t heard, Jannik Sinner will be out for a while longer. The knee injury that has kept him away from the game since winning Wimbledon has now forced him to withdraw from Shanghai this week.

  • What he said: “Unfortunately, I won’t be able to play at the Rolex Shanghai Masters this year as I had hoped,” Sinner posted on social media. “I always enjoy playing in front of the Shanghai fans and I’m very sorry that I won’t be able to do so next week. Thank you for all your support. I’m looking forward to seeing you again next year!”

  • By the numbers: For Sinner, the good news is that he only has 50 points to defend from last year in Shanghai. The bad news is that Alexander Zverev, who is rapidly gaining on Sinner in the rankings, also only has 50 points to defend in Shanghai. The gap between number one and number two is rapidly closing, with Alcaraz in a very distant third.

  • Next: Unclear. Sinner said he would make a decision this week about his participation in the Six Kings Slam in Saudi Arabia later this month. He’s made no qualms about the fact that he’s played the event for the cash, but it’s going to be a really bad look if he takes the court in Riyadh while skipping out on actual slams and a whole slew of 1000s.

🎾 One to watch: Karolina Muchova vs. Naomi Osaka (4th round - WTA 1000 - Beijing): Watch this one because it’s always a show. Witnessing Muchova do her best to disarm Osaka’s pure power plays with slice, coming to the net, and use of angles is some of the most entertaining tennis there is on the WTA Tour. This match will likely be decided by how well both players serve (and Osaka’s winners-to-unforced-errors ratio).

  • The record: Karolina Muchova leads the head-to-head record over Naomi Osaka 4-3, with Muchova winning their most recent meeting on the grass of Wimbledon in the quarterfinals.

  • On the line: At this stage of the tournament, neither player has to worry about ranking points from last year’s performances. For Osaka, this is an opportunity to keep the year going at a consistent clip — something that was missing in 2025 and the beginning of 2026. For Muchova, every win counts in the Race to the WTA Finals, where she’s currently in the 7th spot.
