Good morning, Court Theorists! ☕️☀️
Today’s tennis mood: Exhausted by bad behavior and excited to see what comes of Jovic vs. Swiatek.
Let’s tennis!

🎾 On tap: With the pair of ATP 500s in Beijing and Tokyo all wrapped up, we’re moving on to the first round of Shanghai for a Masters 1000 on the men’s side. Meanwhile, the WTA 1000 in Beijing continues, where we’re in the fourth round. In action today: Coco Gauff, Iva Jovic, Iga Swiatek, Qinwen Zheng, Matteo Berrettini, Arthur Fery, and Holger Rune, among others. Catch the rundown below.
🎾 ICYMI: Yes, it’s Tuesday. But we have a pair of winners on the men’s side.
Tokyo: Carlos Alcaraz won his first tournament since Doha in February, taking out Jiri Lehecka 7-6, 6-4. “I’m really happy about it,” Alcaraz said after the match. “A tough week. I didn’t find my best level, but I did find the good solutions, and I think that is what matters at the end. Playing the most important points the best you can. I think I did it this week. I would say today was the best match of the week, or at least more consistent, the level that I played.”
Beijing: Keeping an astonishing undefeated 34-0 record in the Imperial City, Novak Djokovic defeated Alex de Minaur by retirement 7-6, 0-1. “It’s a bit of a strange feeling, to be honest,” Djokovic said. “I want to celebrate, because I’ve played one of the best weeks in the last couple of years. At the same time, he [de Minaur] retired at the beginning of the second, so it doesn’t feel right to jump around and be joyful. But deep inside, I’m very proud of this achievement.”
🎾 Sinner shuts it down: Shortly after pulling out of Shanghai, Jannik Sinner has called time on 2026 to treat a knee injury that has kept him off the tour since winning Wimbledon in July.
What he said: “The last couple of years, especially the ending in Turin, have given me so many beautiful feelings and emotions, which this year is going to be way different,” Sinner said in a video posted on social media. “At the moment, I also need to think about my long-term career.”
By the numbers: With more than 3,000 points to come off the remainder of the year, Sinner will lose the number one ranking to Alexander Zverev. Exactly when depends on Zverev’s performances in the upcoming weeks.
🎾 One to watch: Iva Jovic vs. Iga Swiatek (4th round - WTA 1000 - Beijing): Watch this one for the serious consequences.
The record: This will be the first time Iva Jovic and Iga Swiatek face each other.
On the line: For both players, this match is about a fight for the top 10 and a shot at the WTA Tour Finals. In the live rankings, Swiatek is on the cusp of dropping outside the top 10 — a place she hasn’t been since 2021, when she rapidly rose up the rankings and soon shot to number one. Meanwhile, Jovic, who is just one spot below in the live rankings at number 11, has a shot at cracking the top 10 for the first time. In the Race to the WTA Finals, Swiatek and Jovic are in the same spots, 10 and 11, respectively. Making the quarters or better of a 1000-level tournament will keep one of them in the conversation.
