🎾 Red again: We’re firmly into the red clay season with four tournaments in Europe this week: two in Germany, one in Spain, and another in France. More on that below. But, in a true sign of how grueling the clay season is, seven lucky losers have been ushered into the main draws across those four events as of publishing this morning. And there’s little doubt that more withdrawals are still to come. 🫤
🎾 Yo, Philly! There’s a new tennis shop in town! I spent a good chunk of time on Saturday afternoon talking with Mark Kuczynski, the owner of the URacquet Shop in West Philly. It’s a gutsy move to open a tennis shop at a time when so much of the world takes care of its shopping needs from a screen. But there’s something you just can’t get tapping away: expertise. And Mark has that in spades. He’s a certified Master Racquet Technician by the USRSA who has been called up by the ATP Tour for his services at tournaments. He also takes care of the equipment needs of some of the nation’s best college and junior players. More than all of that, he cares. Even if the shop is too far away for your regular needs, ping him for racket customization. I promise it’s worth the effort to tap into this kind of mastery.
🎾 The final we were waiting for: Some fans may say it’s boring to routinely see Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in the final of so many tournaments. But I promise you they aren’t skipping those finals, either. Besides, the Monte-Carlo final was their first of 2026. In a way, Sinner’s 7-6, 6-3 win over Alcaraz on Sunday was something of a shock, since Sinner’s only other win over Alcaraz on clay had come four years ago at Umag. In another, Sinner’s level of play for the last two months has been unwavering, while Alcaraz’s has not been as sharp.
What he said: “We came here just trying to get as many matches as possible, having good feedback before other big tournaments coming up,” Sinner said after the match. “Today was very high level from both of us... Getting back to No. 1 means a lot to me. At the same time, as I always say, the ranking is secondary. I’m very happy to win at least one big trophy on this surface. I haven’t done it before, so it means a lot to me.”
And what he said: “I’m not surprised," said Alcaraz. “We’ve already seen his level on this surface, and he’s improving a lot year after year. He can win any tournament on any surface. He understands the game very well on clay.”
Noteworthy: For Sinner to win back-to-back Masters 1000 events in the Sunshine Double was tricky enough. Then, to take the very next 1000 event on a completely different surface is a master stroke.
🎾 One to watch: Cameron Norrie vs. Stan Wawrinka (1st round - ATP 500 - Barcelona): We here at Court Theory HQ aren’t missing Stan Wawrinka matches during his last year on tour — especially on clay. Neither player has had the best start to the clay season, with just one match win between them. Given Norrie’s fitness levels, Wawrinka needs a strong start — something he’s been working on. How does this one shake out? Magic 8 Ball says: Reply hazy, try again.
The record: Stan Wawrinka leads the head-to-head record over Cameron Norrie 2-0. This will be the first time they face each other on clay.
On the line: Neither player is worried about defending points this week. This is about pride for both. And, for Wawrinka, it’s his last go around. That means he wants to put his best tennis forward, which will lead to a win.

And that’s game.
