🎾 Madrid today: It’s that time of these long 1000-level tournaments when, even though there are six days left, there are just two women’s matches today. More on that shortly. On the men’s side, it’s alllllll the round of 16 matches.

  • Spanish teen Rafa Jodar has an incredible opportunity to make his first quarterfinal in a Masters 1000 event (in front of a home crowd, no less), by facing Vit Kopriva today. Will he be bothered by the weight of the moment? We’ll see soon enough.

  • Although Mirra Andreeva and Leylah Fernandez have a 1-1 head-to-head record, somehow they haven’t faced off in nearly three years. That changes today.

  • Jakub Mensik has a chance to be a hero to many today, as he takes on Alexander Zverev for the first time.

  • ICYMI: Alexander Blockx took down Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6, 6-3, showing that he is, indeed, for real. Anastasia Potapova continues her streak with a straight-set win over Elena Rybakina 7-6, 6-4. Coco Gauff just didn’t have it against Linda Noskova, who won in three: 6-4, 1-6, 7-6.

🎾 Under the radar: As the defending champ in Madrid, Casper Ruud sure is moving through the draw quietly. In two matches, he’s dropped just five games and is reminiscent of Roland-Garros Finalist Casper Ruud. If we’re being honest, that’s kind of surprising after his recent form. He came into the Madrid Open 9-8 for the year. He’s seemed uninspired, distracted, and not quite in shape. Seemingly at the flip of a switch, that’s all changed. On Monday, he dismissed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3, 6-1 in less than 90 minutes and in a true thrashing. Maybe it’s defending champ energy, or maybe he’s drawing inspiration from Cousin Oscar. Whatever it is, it’s brilliant to see.

  • Next: On Tuesday, Ruud faces Stefanos Tsitsipas, who is also regaining some semblance of his former self in Madrid (although not quite to the same degree as Ruud).

🎾 One to watch: Aryna Sabalenka vs. Hailey Baptiste (Quarterfinals - WTA 1000 - Madrid): Watch this one to see how Hailey Baptiste measures up against the world number one under some favorable conditions. She’s already taken out world number nine Jasmine Paolini and world number 11 Belinda Bencic. But it’s also a good test for Sabalenka, who is playing her first clay event of the season after skipping Stuttgart. Who wins? Probably Sabalenka. But it’s not a foregone conclusion after their close match in Miami last month.

  • The record: Aryna Sabalenka leads the head-to-head record over Hailey Baptiste 1-0 after defeating her 6-4, 6-4 at this year’s Miami Open.

  • On the line: Sabalenka has defending-champ points to maintain this week, but that’s unlikely to be a concern for her with Rybakina out of the tournament. Still, she’d like more matches after skipping Stuttgart. Meanwhile, Baptiste is in her second 1000-level tournament quarterfinal of the year, and she’s gaining belief from it. She’s got nothing to lose. Why not go for it?
