Good morning, Court Theorists! ☕️☀️
Today’s tennis mood: Cheering on doubles while bracing for Stan Wawrinka’s match.
Let’s tennis!
-Allen

🎾 On tap: Today’s best matches are a little lopsided toward Basel and Vienna, with some truly unfortunate first-round matches: Tommy Paul vs. Andrey Rublev, Flavio Cobolli vs. Grigor Dimitrov, Carlos Alcaraz vs. Karen Khachanov, and doubles partners Alex Michelsen and Botic van de Zandscshulp all facing off. Add on top of all that, the prime-time match in Basel could be Stan Wawrinka’s final professional match.
🎾 One theory: More than 150 current and former doubles players on the ATP Tour have signed an open letter to the ATP board, urging it to reverse course on plans to cut prize money and draw sizes in pro tennis.
What they said: “The current plans would shift about $20 million in prize money from doubles to singles, while cutting a significant number of professional opportunities for doubles specialists. That shift would make it much harder for talented players to build and sustain a doubles career. A healthy professional sport cannot rely solely on a small group of top stars; it needs pathways for players to develop, compete and earn a living.” They added: “We don’t oppose reform; we want to help shape it.”
Noteworthy: Twenty national federations signed the open letter. None of the ones with majors — the USTA, the LTA, Tennis Australia, or the French Tennis Federation — were among them.
Intriguing: The Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) hasn’t said anything about the open letter.
🎾 Vegas, baby: That’s Rafa Nadal, who will play in an exhibition headlined as “The MGM Slam presented by Capital One.” It’s the second time around for Nadal, who played Carlos Alcaraz in the Vegas exhibition in 2024 during his final year on tour.
What he said: “I remember how impressive it was to feel the energy of a full arena in a city like Las Vegas,” Nadal said. “Now I return in a different stage of my life, without the pressure of the tour but with the same passion for this sport. I have always loved competing, and even if my professional career is finished, that feeling never really goes away.”
Who else: That’s unclear at the moment. No others have been named. Organizers say they will announce more players in the upcoming weeks.
🎾 One to watch: Stan Wawrinka vs. Jiri Lehecka (1st round - ATP 500 - Basel): Watch this because we’re not missing Stan Wawrinka matches right now.
The record: Stan Wawrinka and Jiri Lehecka have never faced each other before.
On the line: Lehecka has no ranking points to defend, so this match is about trying to stack points and climb back toward the top 10. For Wawrinka, this moment is about playing the kind of tennis he’s known for — win or lose. If it’s good enough, he’ll win and try again in the next round. Release the Stanimal!
