Good morning, Court Theorists! ☕️☀️
Today’s tennis mood: Contemplative on careers, but also ready for emergence.
Let’s tennis!
-Allen

🎾 Kei out: This season will be the final one for 36-year-old Kei Nishikori. The former world number four and U.S. Open finalist has been struggling to remain healthy for years. And even when it seemed he was making a solid comeback in 2025, his body eventually rejected the request. So far this year, he’s struggled to pull off wins at the ATP Challenger level. Now, barely inside the top 500, it’s unclear where he’ll find wild cards to end his career at a respectable venue. The post-U.S. Open Asian swing is the most likely — and Tokyo would be the perfect candidate.
What he said: "My love for tennis and my belief that I could become a stronger player always brought me back to the court. I feel that all of these experiences have enriched and shaped my life. I am deeply grateful [for] my family and to everyone who has supported me at all times," Nishikori wrote. "To be honest, I still wish I could continue my playing career. Even so, looking back on everything up to this point, I can proudly say that I gave it my all.”
🎾 BS: That’s Before Summer around these parts. As we move through spring and prepare for summer tennis, consider powering Court Theory up by becoming a Court Theory Plus member for as little as the cost of a can of tennis balls each month. It upgrades your experience and helps secure Court Theory’s future!
🎾 One to watch: Jannik Sinner vs. Arthur Fils (Semifinals - ATP 1000 - Madrid): Watch this one for a potential upset. Both players had three-setters in the first round, but they have otherwise been burning through opponents in straight sets.
The record: Jannik Sinner and Arthur Fils are tied at 1-1, but the Fils win was a walkover.
On the line: For Sinner, this match represents a chance to run up some points with Alcaraz out of commission for a while and get the reps he needs on perhaps his least favorite surface. But Fils no doubt sees this match as an opportunity to show he belongs in the conversation about players who can challenge the Alcaraz-Sinner lock.
