🎾 Programming note: Today is a travel day for some U.S. Open events, meetings, and, hopefully, some tennis. So, today’s newsletter will be a little more brief.
🎾 On tap: After some wild first- and second-round matches (hello to Martin Damm defeating Daniil Medvedev 🤯), the tournaments in Monterrey and Winston-Salem are moving into the round of 16. And, at the U.S. Open, the second round of qualies kicks off.
🎾 One to watch: Aleksandar Kovacevic vs. Stefanos Tsitsipas(Round - ATP 250 - Winston-Salem): Watch this one for the battle of the one-handed backhands. Just enjoy that for a moment.
The record: Stefanos Tsitsipas leads the head-to-head record 1-0 over Aleksandar Kovacevic. However, that sole meeting was two years ago.
On the line: Kovacevic is attempting to regain some confidence. Open. Since reaching the semifinals of Hamburg in May, he’s won only three main draw matches in 9 tournaments. A win over Tsitsipas ahead of the U.S. Open would be a big help. Tsitsipas is in a similar boat on the confidence front. Add to that the fact that he’s still trying to prove to everyone (maybe even himself) that he made the right call by booting his father from the coaching camp. (Note to Stef: the right call doesn’t always yield great results.)
