Good morning from Tennis Paradise, Court Theorists! ☕️🌴😎
Today’s tennis mood: Highly intrigued with a side of “Why did this match have to happen so soon?”
Let’s tennis!

🎾 Still a winner: When I wrote in The Daily Theory yesterday that we here at Court Theory HQ don’t miss Venus Williams matches, this is what I meant (suite view courtesy of our friends at Topnotch Tennis). It wasn’t meant to be for Vee, who put up a strong three-set battle against Diane Parry. But Venus always lets us know she is the one who feels like she has come out on top.
What she said: “Of course, losing isn't fun, but it’s great to play in front of a home crowd,” Williams said after the match. “I have amazing fans that believe in me, and it's fun to play for them, or even in practice when they come out. It’s very thrilling. Yeah, today was a tough one, but that’s sport, and that's life, and I’ll take what I need from it.”
Quick question: “Will we see you and Serena play together this year, do you think?” Answer: “I think you should definitely ask her that,” Williams said. 🫠
🎾 New balls, please: Per usual, there’s been no shortage of discussion about the tennis balls at Indian Wells. What’s been particularly fascinating over the last few days is watching players arrive to practice on-site for the first time, and observing their first 20 minutes with the Dunlop balls. One particular group of French players and their coaches stopped after 10 minutes to gather at the net to scrutinize the balls. They were silent with looks of total bewilderment on their faces — like Americans trying to figure out how to eat an artichoke. No word from Daniil Medvedev on this front just yet. But as ball-checker-in-chief, it’s just a matter of time.
🎾 Mic check: Today, I’m interviewing Stevie Johnson about his career, career change, and the Nothing Major podcast. Got a question for Stevie? Hit reply, let me know what it is, and I’ll do my best to work it in.
🎾 One to watch: Ben Shelton vs. Reilly Opelka (2nd round - ATP 1000 - Indian Wells): Watch this one because it’s a battle when these two play, and it will be some of the most highlight reel-worthy tennis all day. Who wins this one? Likely Shelton, but the slower court just might give Opelka a shot at the Shelton serve to provide some topsy-turvy momentum shifts.
The record: Ben Shelton leads the head-to-head record over Reilly Opelka, 2-0. But! These two haven’t faced off since 2024.
On the line: Opelka needs to put some ranking points on the board if he’s going to get back into the top 50 and head back up to his career-high ranking of 17. Meanwhile, Shelton has quarterfinalist points to defend from last year’s Indian Wells. And, with little doubt, he wants to capitalize on his streak from reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and winning the Dallas Open.

And that’s game.
