🎾 A day of blowouts: Perhaps some of these scorelines from Thursday were expected, but not all of them. Here’s how yesterday’s scorelines shook out…

  • Jannik Sinner took down Frances Tiafoe in the first men’s quarterfinal 6-2, 6-2 by knocking down 14 aces and smacking 33 winners. That’s nearly 12 games’ worth of points where Tiafoe didn’t even touch the ball. 🤯

  • And Alexander Zverev defeated Francisco Cerundolo in the other 6-1, 6-2.

  • Meanwhile, in the women’s semifinals, Coco Gauff dominated Karolina Muchova 6-1, 6-1 — a nice boost of confidence going into the final after some erratic play earlier in the tournament.

  • And Aryna Sabalenka had the closest match of the day, defeating Elena Rybakina 6-4, 6-3. But even that one didn’t feel all that close, given how favorable the winner-to-unforced-error ratio was toward Sabalenka (not to mention her 9 aces compared to Rybakina’s two).

🎾 Withdrawals: Earlier this week, we were puzzling over whether Taylor Fritz would take time to recover properly from the ongoing tendinitis problem in his knee. Now we have our answer. Tournament organizers at the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 have announced that Fritz has withdrawn from the event due to injury. Today, Novak Djokovic joined Fritz in withdrawing from Monte-Carlo, per the tournament. There is no word on the reason, but he did pull out of Miami, citing a shoulder injury. And Emma Navarro has pulled out of her home tournament (owned by her father), citing some ongoing — but unspecified — health issues.

🎾 Coaching carousel: We have a bit of news on the coaching front for two top WTA players. Amanda Anisimova announced that she has split ways with her coach Rick Vleeshouwers. On Instagram, she thanked him for a successful year and for “seeing and treating me as a human first, before an athlete.” And, in a coaching situation that makes so much that we here at Court Theory HQ can’t believe it hadn’t already happened, reports are coming in that Iga Swiatek will add Francisco Roig to her team. Roig, who recently worked with Emma Raducanu, is a former coach of Rafa Nadal.

🎾 One to watch: Jiri Lehecka vs. Arthur Fils (Semifinals - WTA 1000 - Miami): Watch this one for the fresh faces in the final four. These two have been producing top-tier tennis for more than a week in Miami. Add on top of that a little help from the draw, and we’ve got an exciting semifinal for a shot to play a top-five opponent in either Jannik Sinner or Alexander Zverev.

  • The record: Arthur Fils leads the head-to-head record over Jiri Lehecka, 2-1. Fils won their most recent meeting on the hard courts of Doha earlier this year, 6-3, 6-3.

  • On the line: For both players, this match is about a shot at a Masters 1000 title. And, for both players, it’s that much more meaningful as they return to form after enduring similar back injuries in the last couple of years.
