🎾 Some Monday: The Miami Open certainly did not see the point in easing into the week. Here are some matches you certainly would not have wanted to miss…

  • Frances Tiafoe took down defending champion Jakub Mensik, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, which included an epic 18-minute match-ending tiebreak.

  • Hailey Baptiste is still on a run in Miami after sending Jelena Ostapenko packing, 6-3, 6-4.

  • Francisco Cerundolo defeated “So Back” Daniil Medvedev, 6-0, 4-6, 7-5.

  • The first half of Victoria Mboko vs. Mirra Andreeva was exactly the match we here at Court Theory HQ called out yesterday. Then, injury snatched it away, with Mboko winning, 7-6, 4-6, 6-0. It’s serious enough that it caused Andreeva to withdraw from their doubles match together.

  • Alex Michelsen took down Alejandro Tabilo in three tight sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, and then shushed the pro-Tabilo crowd Taylor Fritz-style once it was over.

🎾 Split up: Just after publishing yesterday’s edition of The Daily Theory, some big news broke: Iga Swiatek and her coach, Wim Fissette, were going their separate ways. At Indian Wells, I watched a lot of practice sessions. There was no weirder energy on the court than Iga’s sessions. Fissette was an island unto himself on that court with just four people on it. The writing was on the wall, and he seemed to know it just as much as anybody.

  • What she said: “Sometimes life and sport bring moments like this,” Swiatek posted on Instagram. “Miami was challenging for me. I feel disappointment, bitterness and responsibility for my performance on the court of course. I’ve also learned a lot of important lessons and I think that’s very human.”

  • And: “That being said, after many months of working together with my coach Wim Fissette, I’ve decided to take a different path. It was an intense time full of challenges and many important experiences. I’m grateful for his support, experience, and everything we achieved together — including one of my biggest dreams in sport.”

  • Noteworthy: Swiatek also said, almost defiantly, “The rest of my team remains unchanged.” Many of us who have wondered if her traveling psychologist, Daria Abramowicz, would also see an exit now have our answer.

  • Some clarity: Swiatek’s decision should be seen less as punishment for Fissette and more as she needed her house in order before hitting the part of the year that is personally the most important to her. There is no possible way for her to have carried on as-is going into the clay season.

  • Next: No word on a new coach just yet. It’s going to take a certain kind of person who will deal with the rest of the team unchanged.

🎾 One to watch: Valentin Vacherot vs. Arthur Fils (4th round - ATP 1000 - Miami): Watch this one for two exciting players who are truly on top of their game right now. Expect massive hitting from both sides of the court with some highlight-worthy shotmaking. Who wins this one? Fils might have a slight edge, but only if you’re splitting hairs.

  • The record: This will be the first time Valentin Vacherot and Arthur Fils face each other.

  • On the line: After Fils absolutely spanked Stefanos Tsitsipas in the previous round, he declared, “I am fully back.” He will want to make good on that claim against a player who has been rock solid since winning Shanghai last year. As for Vacherot, he’s looking for another quarterfinal showing at a Masters 1000 event.
