Hailey Baptiste Lands a Giant Win, Jodar vs. Sinner & More

Good morning, Court Theorists! ☕️

Today’s tennis mood: Still charged up and ready for a miracle!

Let’s tennis!
-Allen

🎾 That time: We’ve got five days left in the Madrid Open, but only four singles matches today. It’s a recurring theme: tournaments start to feel over when they should be picking up in excitement. Some of you have asked about the alternatives. Here are a few fixes…

  • No 1000-level tournament should begin main draw matches on a Tuesday. Period.

  • End byes for the seeds. They’ll complain, and that’s okay.

  • Expand the doubles draws and market the event properly.

  • Bonus: introduce a mixed doubles event to all the 1000 tournaments where men and women play together. Fans love it. The doubles specialists treasure it. And it makes mixed doubles at the majors and the Olympics that much more compelling.

🎾 A BFD: That’s what we’re calling Hailey Baptiste’s win over Aryna Sabalenka. In The Daily Theory yesterday, we here at Court Theory HQ called out that match as the one to watch because we saw the potential not only for a brilliant match but also an upset if Baptiste would just go for it. And go for it, she did. Over the course of two-and-a-half hours, Baptiste knocked down 12 aces and smacked 42 winners playing gutsy tennis until she emerged the winner 2-6, 6-2, 7-6.

  • What she said: “I played her a few weeks ago, and it was kind of a close match,” Baptiste said in her post-match press conference. “I just got broken once in each set. So I had a better idea of how to play her, and how I should play, adjustments I needed to make. So I think I just went in trying to play my game, still doing the same things that I've been doing, but I had a few adjustments I needed to make from the last time we played.”

  • Yes, but: Aside from Baptiste’s brilliant play, Sabalenka seemed uncharacteristically distracted in different periods throughout the match — especially as she had six match points.

  • Intriguing: Might those distractions have been the result of some personal matters? There have been some murmurs across social media, and also noted by Court Theory reader Mary Delany, that Sabalenka wasn’t wearing her massive engagement ring, and her fiancé was missing from the player’s box. 👀

  • Next: Baptiste will face Mirra Andreeva in her first 1000-level semifinal on Thursday.

🎾 One to watch: Jannik Sinner vs. Rafael Jodar (Quarterfinals - ATP 1000 - Madrid): Watch this one to see what Spanish teen Rafa Jodar can do against the world number one before a home crowd. There are a lot of similarities in how the two play. Let’s see how they react when faced with a mirror image of themselves.

  • The record: This will be the first time Jannik Sinner and Rafa Jodar face each other.

  • On the line: Jodar is playing with house money today, and he should just go all out. Meanwhile, all the pressure is on Sinner to win, even if he’s facing zero ranking pressure with Carlos Alcaraz sidelined for at least a month.
