🎾 A tough loss to the right person: Coco Gauff was forced to retire against Alex Eala on Sunday night with a left arm injury. But the moment wasn’t lost on Eala, who had heartfelt words on International Women’s Day.
What she said: “I want to say thank you to all the incredible women who have paved the way, who have advocated for themselves and for other women,” Eala said to a roar from the crowd. “Among them is Coco. So thank you, Coco, for being an amazing competitor and amazing role model, and I really hope that everything is well and you will recover soon.”
And then: She turned to her mother, saying, “I want to thank her for being the amazing woman that she is,” adding, "and for helping me become the woman that I am. And that goes to all mothers."
Next: Eala faces Linda Noskova in the round of 16 on Tuesday.
🎾 Back in action: Joao Fonseca was back in top form on Monday night, taking down Tommy Paul, 6-2, 6-3. It was the kind of hype-worthy tennis he had become known for as he came out on tour: 20 winners and only 12 unforced errors. But it was more than that. It was his ability to hit big shots off both wings from all parts of the court, even on defense. That performance has earned him a match against Jannik Sinner in the next round — something that he is more than looking forward to.
What he said: “Jannik is a huge player,” Fonseca said after the match. “Him and Carlos, they’re winning everything. I’ll just rest tomorrow and then on Tuesday, back on court, trying to put as much pressure as I can, and trying to play like this.” He added: “We tennis players, we look forward to playing against the top players, so it’s going to be a pleasure, and hopefully I can get the win.”
🎾 One to watch: Alex Michelsen vs. Taylor Fritz (3rd round - ATP 1000 - Indian Wells): Two SoCal kids battling in the California desert? Yes, please. Expect lots of long points as both players grind from the baseline with big groundies. But Michelsen will take his opportunities to come to the net and finish off points there. While Fritz still sits in the number two position on the ATP serving leaderboard, this match will likely be decided by how well Michelsen takes care of his service games.
The record: Alex Michelsen leads the head-to-head record over Taylor Fritz, 1-0. However, that sole meeting came on the clay courts of Geneva in 2024.
On the line: Neither one had a ton of points to defend from last year’s tournament. But both think of this as their hometown tournament and have high expectations as a result.
