🎾 On tap: WTA matches continue in Seoul and Singapore today, and the pair of ATP 250-level tournaments will ease into the main draw with a couple of matches each as they finish up qualifying rounds. As I write this, Billie Jean King Cup is kicking off with Czechia taking on Team Great Britain. And Laver Cup festivities are starting ahead of play on Friday in London.
🎾 Fonseca out: Brazilian star Joao Fonseca has pulled out of the Asian swing, saying he needed time to recover physically and mentally after a trying stretch. Last month, he withdrew from his third-round match in Cincinnati, and he pulled out of the U.S. Open with an abdominal injury.
What he said: “Hi everyone. I wanted to share something with you all. 2026 has been a very challenging year for me. On top of everything the profession demands, a series of injuries ended up taking me out of important tournaments and keeping me from playing the way I would like to,” Fonseca wrote. “I know that’s just part of an athlete’s life, but even so, it’s still frustrating. I made a huge effort to return and represent Brazil in the Davis Cup, but I still need more time.”
Next: Unclear. Fonseca just indicated he would see his fans “soon.”
🎾 One to watch: Oleksandra Oliynykova vs. Maja Chwalinska (2nd round - WTA 500 - Singapore): Watch this one for the chess match this one is guaranteed to be. Off pace, high pace, counterpunching, serving and volleying (okay, well, just on one side for that one), and dramatics versus a poker face. This is entertainment value of a different kind.
The record: Maja Chwalinska leads the head-to-head record over Oleksandra Oliynykova 1-0.
On the line: Both players have massively leveled up since this time last year, and both have approximately 200 points to defend from doing well at a trio of WTA 125 events in 2025. One of them is walking away with just 60 points in Singapore. Which one will it be?
