🎾 Friends: Big news on the friends front. On Thursday, our friends at Racquet were named as National Magazine Awards finalists in the profile writing category among titans such as GQ, Vogue, The New Yorker, and The New York Times Magazine. It was for the piece, “Bring Me Back to Life,” written by Court Theory friend Caira Conner. And, Court Theory friend (not to mention legendary editor) David Granger edited the piece.

It’s a proud moment for no shortage of reasons. But the occasion is also a reminder of something I know to be true: this sport is a powerful vehicle to tell some of the best human stories on earth. So, if you haven’t read the piece, read it. And, if you have, enjoy it again.

🎾 Big trouble: Emma Navarro is taking the scenic route on the struggle bus. As the defending champion in Merida, Navarro lost her first match on Thursday night in straight sets against qualifier Shuai Zhang. It’s a baffling year for the former top 10 player, who has not defeated anybody ranked above her and whose losses have been entirely to players ranked below her. After not winning a match in Merida, she drops to 25 in the current live rankings.

🎾 Programming note: I’ll be at Indian Wells next week, so hit reply if you’ll be there and let me know! Between now and then, I’ll be preparing for player interviews and meetings. So, the next issue of The Daily Theory won’t be out until play resumes on Wednesday. Until then…

🎾 One to watch: Andrey Rublev vs. Tallon Griekspoor (Semifinals - ATP 500 - Dubai): Forget the decisive head-to-head record. Watch this one because these two are playing the most consistently high-level tennis of any two players facing each other today.

  • The record: Andrey Rublev leads the head-to-head record over Tallon Griekspoor 3-0.

  • On the line: This match (and the final for one of them) is all about gaining confidence going into the Sunshine Double. In different ways, both have had spotty years thus far. Another strong performance, regardless of outcome, can do a lot of good.
