Goffin’s Emotional Win, Roddick Sounds Off on Serena, Wawrinka vs. Cobolli & More

Good morning, Court Theorists! ☕️☀️

Today’s tennis mood: Truly happy for David Goffin and pondering the doping rules changes.

Let’s tennis!

Four Points

🎾 On tap: The quarterfinals are set for the women in Ningbo and Osaka, while the men in Almaty, Brussels, and Lyon will lock in their quarterfinalists today. In action: Leylah Fernandez, Iva Jovic, Ann Li, Elena Rybakina, Zizou Bergs, Taylor Fritz, and Daniil Medvedev, among others. The old men of the tournaments — David Goffin and Stan Wawrinka — fought to live another day, and they’re both playing today. More on today’s line-up below.

🎾 2027 planning: We here at Court Theory HQ are starting to put together travel plans for next year. And I’m curious which tournaments are on your calendar. Hit reply and let me know! Maybe there will be a Court Theory happy hour or something else to get us all together.

🎾 One to watch: Flavio Cobolli vs. Stan Wawrinka (2nd round - ATP 250 - Lyon): Watch this one because it goes the distance each time they play. Add on top of that the fact that, yesterday, Wawrinka won his first tour-level match since May. Surely he’ll play more confidently because of it.

  • The record: Flavio Cobolli leads the head-to-head record over Stan Wawrinka 2-0.

  • On the line: Wawrinka wants to soak up as much time doing what he loves before it all comes to an end this month. Meanwhile, Cobolli is trying to guarantee his place in the ATP Tour Finals. And given how close the race is, stacking points at every opportunity matters.

(Yesterday’s poll results: 60% of you called for Jasmine Paolini to defeat Iva Jovic. Jovic won 6-4, 6-3.)

And that’s game.
