🎾 Winding down: Like yesterday, we’re down to four matches today — and they don’t begin until 1:00 ET. A few of you replied to my complaint in yesterday’s issue of The Daily Theory that it feels like the tournament is ending with five days left to go. Some of you wondered what the tournament is supposed to do. I’m so glad you asked. Here are a few things…

  • Don’t start so early: There’s really no reason for a 1000-level event to begin on Tuesday. It’s a weak day of play, and it dilutes the second week. It’s hard to believe that an extra day works out in their favor in terms of revenue when it’s not a full day of action, and it means there are multiple slow days in the second week.

  • End the byes: If the governing bodies are insisting on making these 1000 tournaments two-week events, it’s time to end the byes for the seeds. We need matches to justify the extended schedule. Will it upset the top players? Probably. But why should they get such a huge advantage of a late start and a free ~$25,000 just for showing up?

  • Expand the doubles draws: At the majors, the doubles draws are a 64-draw. At the 1000s, it’s 32. Keep the campus filled with fans into the second week by expanding the draw. Not sure if a 64 is justified? Start with a 48 and go from there.

🎾 One bonkers win: That honor belongs to Arthur Fils, who saved four match points against Tommy Paul to win their late-night thriller on Wednesday in three sets — all tiebreaks, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4), 7-6 (8-6).

  • What he said: “It was a dogfight, and I never back down from a fight,” Fils said in his on-court interview. “Even if I lose, it’s okay; I just fought the best that I could.”

  • And what he wrote: GABOS (more on that below).

  • Next: In the semifinals, Fils faces Jiri Lehecka, who defeated Martin Landaluce, 7-6, 7-5, on Wednesday.

🎾 A note on Hailey: Yesterday, I called out the Hailey Baptiste vs. Aryna Sabalenka match “to see what happens.” Here’s what happened: Hailey Baptiste has shown how much she’s leveled up in the last few months. She lost 6-4, 6-4 to the number one player in the world. But what’s so exciting about watching Baptiste in this period is that she has really taken in the full range of possibilities with her supreme athleticism. And I suspect she’s just getting started with that.

🎾 One to watch: Aryna Sabalenka vs. Elena Rybakina (Semifinals - WTA 1000 - Miami): All of the matches are interesting today in their own way, but there’s only one blockbuster, and it’s this one. Less than two weeks since their banger of a final in the California desert, the top two players in the world are facing off in the semis of Miami. Expect everything they always give us: massive hitting, huge serving, and competitive drama that’s off the charts.

  • The record: Aryna Sabalenka leads the head-to-head record over Elena Rybakina, 9-7.

  • On the line: Rybakina can’t overtake Sabalenka for the number one spot, but she can whittle away at the lead if she wins over the defending champ.
