Good morning, Court Theorists! ☕️☀️
Today’s tennis mood: Optimistic for college tennis plus chuckling at Alexander Zverev.
Let’s tennis!

🎾 Today in Rome: It’s men’s semifinals day, with two fascinating match-ups for different reasons. Casper Ruud vs. Luciano Darderi will scratch the dirt-dog itch, while Jannik Sinner vs. Daniil Medvedev will bring the competitive drama to the court — especially as Sinner continues his Masters 1000 streak and record-setting. Plus, there’s fun men’s and women’s doubles action.
🎾 Another Raducanu coach: It feels almost farcical that we’re reporting another new coach for Emma Raducanu, but that’s where we are. Except this one isn’t exactly new. Raducanu has rehired Andrew Richardson, the coach who guided her to her 2021 U.S. Open victory — her only title to date. He’s also the coach who was almost immediately fired after said victory. How will it go? Who can say? But he starts today in Strasbourg, France.
🎾 Razorbacks are back: Tennis is off the chopping block at the University of Arkansas, the school announced on Thursday. The news comes less than three weeks after the shocking announcement that the men’s and women’s programs would be discontinued following the current season. An alum uproar (and subsequent massive fundraising campaign) has led to a reinstatement of the program.
What they said: “Following extensive analysis and in alignment with our strategic priorities, we made the difficult decision earlier this spring to discontinue our men’s and women’s tennis programs,” Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek said . “Since that announcement, we have engaged in meaningful dialogue with stakeholders, including alumni and donors, to explain our rationale and listen to their concerns. We are thankful for our generous donors who have stepped forward in recent days with commitments to provide short-term funding for both programs. While this support does not represent a permanent solution, it offers a viable path forward.”
🎾 Programming note: Next week, The Daily Theory will be on semi-hiatus to prepare for Roland-Garros and to bring you some other pieces that have been in the works. Don’t worry, you’ll hear from me plenty — just not the regularly scheduled programming.
And that’s game.
