Alex Eala Stuns, Tiafoe vs. Auger-Aliassime & More

Good morning, Court Theorists! ☕️🌱

Today’s tennis mood: Recovering from Eala fever and ready to sit back and watch more.

Let’s tennis!

🎾 On tap: It’s (mostly) quarterfinals day on the lawns of England and Germany today, with lots of top players facing off, including a pair of all-American matches that could have easily been finals. More on that below.

🎾 Eala’s brilliance: In The Daily Theory yesterday, we here at Court Theory HQ called out the Alex Eala vs. Elena Rybakina match as the one to watch — and we pulled a muscle from all that back-patting afterwards. Eala quickly went down 1-4 before settling in and punching back, which is exactly what she needed to do against Rybakina, who seemed unable to handle the counterattack. In the end, Eala won 7-5, 6-4.

  • What she said: “I am a little foggy right now,” Eala said in her on-court interview. “I’m still shaking, and I was shaking on match point, too. But I’m really happy with today, of course. It could have gone either way. I think there were really tight moments in both sets, and she's an amazing player. She’s the one to beat, so I’m happy to have been able to share the court with her again.”

  • A bit of wisdom: “I think you have to give yourself grace while also being brave,” Eala said when asked about the key to her return success. “I think returning and my game in general — a highlight word would be to be brave. And it makes a big difference when I’m able to do that.”

  • Next: Eala faces Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals today.

🎾 One to watch: Frances Tiafoe vs. Felix Auger-Aliassime (Quarterfinals - ATP 500 - Halle): Watch this one because it’s always a battle when these two face each other. Expect athleticism to the max and a contest centered around which player keeps his nerves in check the best.

  • The record: Felix Auger-Aliassime leads the head-to-head over Frances Tiafoe 3-0.

  • On the line: This is a big test for FAA ahead of Wimbledon, where he is expected to be a top-four seed (but has lost in the first or second round the last four years). For Tiafoe, this match represents an opportunity to show he punches well above his current ranking of 26 in the world.
