Four Points
🎾 Draw day: The Wimbledon draws have been released today, and you can check them out here. Prayers that your favorites haven’t been hit with the worst first-round opponent ever. Check out the women’s singles draw and the men’s singles draw. There’s definitely some chaos brewing.
🎾 Betting bros ban: The Guardian is reporting that the WTA and the ITF are lobbying gambling companies to suspend the accounts of gamblers who have been found to be abusive toward players on tour. The news comes on the heels of a recently released report that showed the frequency and depths of abuse hurled at women on the tour. Some gambling companies have reportedly been receptive to proposed bans.
- Yes, but: Betting companies are sponsors of many of the tours’ tournaments, and FanDuel is an official partner for the WTA, which makes it both imperative and complicated.
- What she said: “I feel like we’ve been talking about this for a long time, but not a lot changes,” Ons Jabuer told the BBC earlier this week. “The big problem is the betting. The betting companies need to vet these people and look at their social media. If they attack players on social media they should be banned from betting for their whole life.”
🎾 A shrinking PTPA?: Earlier this week, the PTPA reduced the number of plaintiffs in (and the scope of) its lawsuit against “the cartel.” Now, it seems the organization is losing individuals who are willing to show up to its gatherings. Last week on Instagram, the organization recalled its Wimbledon mixer, which they viewed as a success. Here’s the picture they posted from this year’s gathering, with the aura of hostages and their smiling captors. Hubi Hurkacz, in particular, looks like he stepped in it.
🎾 The end: Alize Cornet ended her Wimbledon career on Thursday after losing to compatriot Elsa Jacquemot in the final round of qualifying.
- ICYMI: The former world number 11 recently returned to the tour after retiring just a year ago.
- Next: It’s not clear what Cornet has in mind for the rest of the year. Maybe she’s done, or maybe she’ll find herself at a smaller tournament. “I love the game, and I don’t care if I play it in a $25,000 somewhere in the ass of the world, or if I play it in Wimbledon on Centre Court,” said Cornet.
