On tap today: Sebastian Korda suffers another setback, Pam Shriver steps down from Donna Vekic’s camp, the perfect Juneteenth tennis purchase, Coco Gauff takes on Xinyu Wang, plus more in today’s tennis news.

Let’s tennis!

Three Points

🎾 Korda out: American Sebastian Korda announced on Wednesday that he will be out of the grass season due to a leg injury that currently has him using crutches and a boot. “Unfortunately no Wimbledon for me this year,” Korda posted on Instagram. “Stress fracture in my shin during the clay. Been a tough 12 months, but better days ahead.”

  • Why it matters: In general, it’s a tough setback for the 24-year-old, who has been riddled with injuries his entire young career. But it’s especially critical in this part of the year when he has more than 1200 points to defend.

🎾 Coaching change: On Wednesday, Pam Shriver announced her decision to end her coaching relationship with Donna Vekic, calling it “one of the greatest experiences” in her five decades in tennis.

  • What she said: “Here in LA, it’s been a challenging year, therefore I need to lean even more into my community & my family’s wellbeing,” Shriver posted on social media.
  • The timing: The moment for a change might not be so great for Vekic after a string of early-round losses during the clay season and a ton of points to defend in the grass season, most notably from a semifinal Wimbledon run last year.

🎾 Recommended: If you’re looking to celebrate Juneteenth and an important part of tennis history, consider this inspiring Althea Gibson sweatshirt from Resilient Grace — a brand that honors Black women “who walked through adversity so that you and I could run after our dreams.”

And, that’s game.

Watch This!

🔥 Xinyu Wang vs. Coco Gauff (2nd round WTA 500 - Berlin): Watch this one to see what the Roland-Garros champ is bringing to her first grass court match of the year. She has a lot of the tools to be successful on the grass — a powerful (if faulty) serve, a good slice on both sides, and highly competent volleys — but will she put them to use? Let’s see in this low-pressure situation.

  • The record: Coco Gauff leads the head-to-head record over Xinyu Wang, 1-0. Their only meeting was on grass in Berlin in 2022.
